Surely you’ve started to feel the buzz in the air, and not just because it’s cooler and blowing falling leaves onto the ground. Hopefully you’re not sick of pumpkin spice-everything yet, because it’s usually when you get to that point that it’s inevitable - the holidays are here. And with the holidays comes a bombardment of red and green and gold seasonal packaging; candy canes and Christmas trees, Santa Claus and snowmen smacked on every piece of packaging you could imagine, ranging in products from dog treats to diapers.

Dressing up your product in the spirit of the holidays is always a good idea. It’s a chance to refresh your product’s packaging without being too risky, it’ll only be for a few months. It can be used to engage the consumer and boost sales. But how do you make your brand stand out among the sea of snowflakes and tinsel and red-nosed reindeer? And more importantly, how do you maintain your brand equity when you dress it up in the packaging equivalent of an ugly Christmas sweater?

Dressing up your product in the spirit of the holidays is a chance to refresh your product’s packaging and can be used to engage the consumer and boost sales.

Well, for starters, here’s a rule you should always keep in mind with every move you make concerning your brand: don’t stray apart from your brand’s image, voice and story. Remember, your brand is what provides that emotional connection with your consumer. You wouldn’t dare shatter the trust consumers have put in your brand by veering away from your identity in order to parade a Santa Claus on your packaging in hopes of boosting sales. So how do you embody the Christmas spirit without breaking away from the brand consumers have come to love? Simply put: you’ve got to be creative.

First, pinpoint the core elements of your brand’s design that you absolutely must maintain within the seasonal design. This means your brand’s colors, logo, fonts, and identity. Is there a way you can weave them into traditional holiday design? Consider all the details, down to the shape of your product, or envision how your product can be incorporated into a holiday setting. For example, let’s say your product is round, multi-colored candy, like Skittles or M&M’s. Think of something round, or something used as holiday décor that isn’t limited to just green or red. Got it? How about multi-colored Christmas lights? Or a Christmas tree decorated in baubles represented by all the colors of the rainbow? No matter what your product is, there’s surely a way to weave it into a holiday setting, you just need to be creative.

Dive into the holiday madness! Just remember who your brand is, and who your consumers are. And then - get creative!

Another option to consider is a change in the structural design of your packaging. You could package your product in a way that makes it ready to give as a gift, or gives it the ability to be a part of a consumer’s home holiday décor. Depending on what your product is, the possibilities could be very exciting. Who knows? Your holiday packaging could become a collector item whether you intended for it or not.

So by all means, dive into the holiday madness! Just remember who your brand is, and who your consumers are. And then - get creative! Get really creative. With all of the products out there that have been repackaged for the holiday season, you’ve got to figure out a way for your brand not to be lost among them. Easier said than done, we know...but it will definitely be worth it.
