Making Sense Of It All: Has Going Digital Dehumanized Us?

The Information Age, the Digital Age, the Computer Age...even the New Media Age. The times we are living in now have been referred to by many names, and it’s an era that hasn’t quite ended yet. We don’t know what will mark the end of this period. In fact, there are many things we don’t know about the times we are living in right now...particularly, how they have affected us, and how they will mold generations to come.

Generally, we view technological advancement as a good thing, and it’s true - digital innovation has positively impacted our day-to-day life tremendously, especially with regards to the way that we communicate - things that were once difficult, or took too much time to do, have become instant. It started with e-mail and instant messaging, then, when cellular phones became ubiquitous, we began to dream of the day in which we would be able to see the person on the other end of our phone calls. Now, smartphones are widely available, and most are capable of enabling just that.

And then, of course, there’s social media. Before, we were only able to access the first wave of social media platforms (Some of which didn’t exactly last after their initial popular, mostly because Facebook still reigns today) through our desktop computers. With the advent of smartphones and tablets, a slew of social media platforms emerged...because there’s so many options and we’re able to carry them with us wherever we go, some might argue that we have become consumed by them.

It’s become completely normal for a group to sit at a dinner table, each individual engaging with their phone rather than each other. Or for potential employers to accept or deny an applicant based on their social media profile. Modern dating is mostly powered by dating apps. These changes have happened so quickly, it’s interesting to identify how quickly the way we once did things have changed and became the new normal.

Recently, the world has experienced a series of events that have made us question what going digital is doing to us as a society. There is plenty of evidence that shows that social media played a significant role in the outcome of the 2016 US presidential election. Security breaches on certain platforms have divulged personal information, tearing lives apart. Younger generations have a new set of worries to face during their teenage years, as online bullying has become an epidemic.

We are becoming more and more dependent on everything digital, and more and more used to instant gratification. Technology should serve to inspire us to improve and be progressive, but in many ways, it has rendered us complacent. Though social media is meant to connect us, it has made us seek approval in ways that value quantity over quality, inevitably rendering us feeling lonely and unsatisfied.

So, how do we fight the negative ways in which the Digital Age has affected the evolution of humankind? It starts with self-awareness. Young people today are especially vulnerable, having never known a time before the Information Age. Smart decision-making and cognitive skills as well as good ethics need to be taught through our education systems.

The Digital Age has opened up a world of information and opportunity, all available at our fingertips. There are plenty of ways in which it is being used for good and to improve our society. The most important thing is to recognize the ways in which it isn’t, and to reverse those effects, because as far as we can see, the Digital Age has no end in sight. It’s up to us to prevent the digital dehumanization of our society, and luckily, we’ve still got time.
